Video tape first came on the scene in the 1980's with video cassette recorders becoming very popular and affordable in the homes around the country, mainly designed to record programmes from the TV, blank 3 hour tapes were around £10 each.

As the popularity grew so the price of the VCR (video cassette recorders) began to drop as did the price of blank tapes.

Next to emerge was the pre recorded video tapes, this let members of the public buy their favourite films on video to watch in their own homes without going to the cinema
